Dyson Thinks Your Humidifier is Unhealthy

Published by

Renowned British technology company and vacuum cleaner dons Dyson, recently launched its first humidifier, but unlike most humidifiers, which have been known to spread unwanted, potentially harmful bacteria, Dyson's claim their industry-first model is more hygienic than any other on the market. This is thanks to the devices use of ultraviolet light, which kills 99.9% of waterborne bacteria in the chamber of the humidifier itself before the resultant air is dispersed into the room. It is the first humidifier to use ultraviolet light to cleanse the water in this manner and (if I might say so myself) it looks incredibly cool!

The AM10 uses ultraviolet light to kill 99.9% of waterborne bacteria in the chamber of the humidifier itself before the resultant air is dispersed into the room

The Dyson AM10 humidifier, which cost over £37.5 million to develop, has been designed to alleviate the dry skin and cold viruses brought on by dry winter weather, and has also been designed with the home in mind, with preventative measures put in place to ensure your paintwork won't crack and your wallpaper won't peel, side effects which are quite common with lesser devices. The main body of the unit consists of a three-litre water tank, which feeds into a trough where the ultraviolet light uses Dyson's bespoke “Cleanse” technology to kill bacteria in just 3 minutes. An electric pulse is then sent to the device by a piezoelectric transducer in the base of the machine, which vibrates the freshly purified water at an ultrasonic frequency, breaking it down into millions of tiny particles, which are fed into the top section of the humidifier and dispersed into the air using “Air Multiplier” technology, the same tech used in Dyson's existing fans and heaters.

The loop-shaped amplifier at the top of the device has two outlets, one for mist and one for air, which means it can also operate as a generic fan. It can run for up to 18 hours on one full tank and operates super-quietly to prevent noise disturbance during the night, it also has a built-in timer to cut the power automatically when not in use. As if that wasn't enough, a temperature and humidity gauge automatically adjusts the level of humidity to suit the environment, but manual adjustment is also possible via an included magnetic remote control.

In a statement, Dyson cited the primary problem with current humidifiers (besides their own, of course) was that “They harbour nasty bacteria, which is then blown around the room when the machine is turned on." They even add the worrying caveat that “Experts say it’s actually more dangerous to breathe in this bacteria than drink it!” The first batch of Dyson humidifiers were launched earlier this week in Tokyo, with a proposed UK launch in March 2015 via John Lewis and Dyson's official website. UK pricing has yet to be officially announced. The device was first teased last week, when a video of free-flowing water accompanied by just the date (October 20th) was uploaded to the official Dyson YouTube Channel.
